CV Grease

Just came back from a 600 miles round trip to Newquay. During the course of the trip, there was an intermittent loud knocking from the rear. I suspected the CV and when I wiggled it, there was some play on the outside. When I got home, I set about taking the nearside drive shaft off. Turns out that every bolt on the driveshaft was loose to some degree. Two bolts had broken on the outside CV and the remaining 4 bolts could be undone by hand. The inside weren't as loose but certainly weren't torqued up right. I stripped both CVs and concluded that the noise was due to the insecure driveshaft rather than badly worn CVs. Both looked pretty good. Anyway, my question is, I went to GSF and asked for VW G6 grease as per the Haynes manual. They gave me Carlube LM2 general purpose greases lithium based. Having packed both joints, I have a feeling that this might not be the right grease and that it should be Moly grease. Any opinions? Cheers.

You are correct...CV grease is usually a mix of molybedenum and lithium specificly formulated for this type of joint. Multi pupose LM won't harm the joint in the short term but if it were mine I would be replacing this sometime soon....certainly in the next few months.

Halfords do it - £6 a pot. Only thing I ever go in there for.

Thanks for the replies. The shaft is not back in yet as I need new bolts. Ordered some from Brickwerks. Will pop to Halfords (or halfwits according to my phones spell check!) and get the right stuff. Don't want to do this job again in a hurry!

Its in the same sized pot as their Lithium grease, generally right next to it. Cheapest place I know to get it.

Do I need to get all the lithium grease out before adding moly or would it be ok to wipe of what I can before using moly? don't really fancy removing CVs from the drive shaft again!

Wiping out as much as you can should be sufficient before repacking with the correct stuff...you should be able to remove at least 90% if the driveshaft is still off.
