T25 body work advice

Post by jonnydee »

As a newbie to this forum first I would like to say hi to everyone.

I have been reading posts from the sidelines but went to look at my first T25 Pop Top last night, after viewing a Gipsy the other week. I am hoping to make my way into van ownership sometime soon.

I just wanted to get a bit of advice from some of you experienced owners, based on the van I saw last night. I hope you do not mind.

Basically the van had some surface rust on some of the panels joins, it did not look to deep but were the sliding door slides back and latches, on the corner where that pillar meets the sill, the rust has taken a good hold with it almost being through the metal. The area is about 5cm long on the curve. Is this a big job to sort?

Also the floor panels below the rear air vents are holed, on both sides but the chassis looks fine. Should I be worried about this?

The engine is a 1.9 Petrol on a 4 speed box, are these economical and reliable?

And finally, few you say, the interior wall carpets, roof carpets and rear seats need either a good clean or replacing, is this a hard job?

Many thanks Jon

Hello and welcome. where are you based? Bet there's someone here who's near and willing to give it a look over and have a nose.

Welcome to the club.
From what you tell us it sounds like all the normal rust/rot and it just depends how much you want to spend or what you are willing to live with.

Failing someone taking a look for you pictures are the best way of showing us what needs doing.

Chassis's are generally ok but the rust you are looking at could hide a whole lot more.

I can't comment on how economical it is but I should imagine its average! (whatever average is) but you can convert to lpg. Mines still in a garage being worked on very slowly.

More info on price etc may also help.

Good luck though.

Oh and cleaning is only hard if you don't like doing it. You could always replace/recover depending on budget.

Bare in mind that the area behind any rust you can actually see will be much, MUCH worse and there is no point just treating the outside.
I re-trimmed the interior of my van (a high top). It took 10 days and 26 sq metres of fabric.....
