Feeling the burn... oil, how much is ok to burn?

Post by maximillion »

Hi Guys,

Just had my 81, CJ engine out for the winter, fully serviced, plugs, dizzy, etc, etc. Filled it up with oil and after a few miles the oil light came on, soon realized i didn't fill the oil filter, so toped up and all good.

The level was a shade under the top notch on the dip stick, i have done around 200 miles, 170 of which were motorway miles over last weekend, when i returned i re-checked the oil and i was around halfway between the notches on the dip stick, i cant see any noticeable leaks anywhere - is this a lot of oil to (presumably) burn?

Any thoughts appreciated
Thanks

my oil level refuses to stay at the full mark. (2.1 DJ)
I top it up and it will go back to the half way mark
I am not burning, I don't have visible leaks heavy enough to allow this sort of loss in short time.
My crank breather is quite oily, I would suggest this is the way it goes, oil will foam up at high rpm and escape through the breather.
I don't worry about it now as is never drops out of the max-min zone

is it the correct dipstick?

Since getting the crank shaft seal replaced on my CU two years ago my oil level doesn't drop from the max between 5000 mile changes. I always check my oil on level ground the day after a run. If you're checking the oil not long after stopping maybe you're not getting a true level?

Hello,
Crankcase oil seal changed :?:

When were the heads last done, grind, check for play in valve guides, ( a guaranteed oil loser, and the valve stem oil seals... still there... or did they come out with the oil change..

Cordialement,

:ok

Thanks all, had the engine out and no leaking from crankcase oil seal, other than that i dont know any history of the engine...only had it 18 months so no info on valves / heads etc?

Its running quite well, although its not sweet sounding like some other air-cooled engines i have heard, sounds a bit like a diesel to be honest (is this a type 4 trait?)
