pinking

Post by stagg65 »

Just had a full service on my 1.9 d .
Oil, all filters and timing belt.
The thing is that starting not to good on cold mornings now and when the engine gets up to full running temp it starts what only i could call as pinking.
Now i decided to try pulling the pump advance lever out while it was doing it and it stopped.
Im now driving around with the lever half out and its running great and no pinking.
What i cant understand is on petrol engines if they are too advanced they pink, so why is my engine quiter and no pinking.

Take it back to the garage that did the cam belt change...obviously they have upset something and it needs adjusting correctly.

Thinking of adjusting the timing my self.
What I'd like to know is, if I loosen the three bolts at the front and the one at the back will it affect the timing belt.
I don't want it to loosen and bugger everything up.
