I want my boat on my roof

Post by JNW »

I've got a Villa 3 hightop. There are two intenal loops, like small roll cage bars, which I assume the fibreglass roof is fixed to.
I've got a boat. It's about 60kg. If I put fixings through the loops to mount supports for the boat, will that make my van too top heavy?
It would look like one of those Fisher-Price camper toys from the 60s.

I have a hightop on my VW T25 that is actually a boat. Hightop is in 2 sections, a base and then the boat that slides off... I am actually thinking of removing it.

You will see from the handbook that there is no permissible roof load for high roofs. (That said, I know that people do use them them for loads)

Cannot really see its a boat from this pic, but it is, the inside has non-slip areas, place to put a plank to sit on... never seen anything like it so unique!!!

For years I have thought that those "top boxes" designed for cars could easily be made to double up as a boat. :ok

I think it's a VW "Varius" (they produced campers like Westfalia but had the option of either a fixed or a boat roof) - here's a link to some photos from a private homepage: http://www.cwr16.homepage.t-online.de/hp/varius.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Got one of these as well. The second generation unfortunately. The high roof looks very similar, but mine can not serve as a boat as the fibreglass is not sturdy enough, nor does it have the hint of a "keel" in the middle. Swap? :)

That is brilliant. Never knew about the Varius, but looking at the pictures attached to the link provided above it's a fascinating idea. Is there a mechanism to assist with de-mounting and mounting the boat-roof? Have you ever used yours?

Don't take it off, this is the coolest hi-top ever!
