Sliding door handle woble

Post by karmannkarmann »

My early 84 has a wobley sliding door handle, is there a fix for this?

in what way is it wobbling? if the screw is tight on the inside? then waggle the handle and look inside and see if its the lock bit that is moving, if not then the casting usually cracks on the handle where the 1/4" shank comes out,

Mine had same problem. Decided (in the end) that because biggest worry was the way it scraped paint on van, I just ran the tip of handle on a bench grinder and repainted it. Doesn't bother me now. :D

No, they just wear unfortunately. I did take my lock out and couldn't see any practical way to remove the wobble.

You have taken the door card off and tightened the screw that holds it on?

I've tightened the screw behind the door card which has helped it but still is wobbley, will order a grommet and see if that helps too

Bear in mind the tip about grinding a little off the handle if it touches door as a result of the play. It worked for me anyway.

Early ones are different to late doors and they just sit in the hole. I went to a plumbers merchant and scrounged a free o-ring to take up any excess gap after the door escutcheon was in place. By the way they are obsolete from vw but available from the suppliers below
