Knock nock: who's there ? Then silence

Post by RecoveringAcademic »

Its what ya call an intermittent fault. That's who's there...... So indeed a series of educated guesses., please.

Rear end knocking. Speed dependent. Quiet, but insistent. Gentle left, gentle right, no change. Stationary, increase in revs, no knocking at all. So it's running gear. Perhaps.

Wheels off the ground, wiggle wiggle. Solid. wheels removed, poke, rotate, find rounded off bolts ..... Lack of maintenance therefore.

Test run. Silence. Another test run.....50 miles. Silence.

Don't you just love intermittent faults?

Next step? Help!
Thanks in advance.

Check for play in the wheel bearings, try gently pulling the handbrake .. any difference ? Does it speed up with the van ? When were the CV joints last checked ?

Same symptoms happened to me. Speed related not revs related. Intermittent. Only when transmission under load (clutch engaged, power on or brakes on)... until the bitter end when it started doing it regardless.

Mine was CV joints. There wasn't anything obvious to the eye (no split boots), nor from wiggling them either.

PITA to have to get done (either a massive faff doing it yourself, or a good few quid labour done for you), but at least once they're done they're done for a looong time.

And of course, it might not be CV joints... see Ian's comments. :)

Right. Thanks. Half suspected CV stuff. I need a new engine and gear box, so I'll get it (them) done then.
Cheers!

Yes, it is speed related. I deeply suspect CVs. But more from instinct than evidence. Zen and the Art of T25 Maintenance strikes !

I don't know about Zen but eventually you'll get to a point where you've caught up with all the previous owner's neglect and bodges ... it can take time though :?

Mine had *no grease in whatsoever*. And some rounded out hex nuts. :(

Joy of £300odd joys.

I still convince myself I bought a good one, too. :)

I'm also really grateful for the prompt support - like you I sometimes let sentiment rule - my excuse is that I drove t25s when I worked in Berlin in the 80s. And I'm starting to like solving the problems the van throws up..

Every now and then the club asks for donations to pay for the website hosting etc, when the kind people who sort these things need it they will ask

Otherwise come along to a club meet and have a beer with us :ok

I'm not suggesting that you cut corners but often after many years of use the graphite grease in a CV joint goes very hard and sticks together in clumps leaving the joint mechanism almost dry. If this is caught early enough (before too much wear occurs) you can usually get away with cleaning the joints in petrol, blowing off and re-packing with CV grease.

A club meet: where? When?

By the way, I run a fairly large website for Manchester Metropolitan University: if you need any help with the web site , technical stuff.....

There are specific forums in 'Members Only' that detail up and coming club meets and VW shows but you can't access them at the moment as your username is black which means you are only registered to post on some forums rather than a full member. Full member's usernames are blue - just like mine

Click on the 'Membership' tab at the top of the page, follow the instructions and in a week or so (depending on how busy Mockie is) you will have access to the relevant forums and a nice blue username to boot.

If your name turns purple with 8 stars after it, you'll get a bumper box of brand new VW goodies such as the much sought after passenger ejector seat mechanism (not so great in tin tops).

Can't wait to be old enough to qualify.
