Sikaflex 221 as Outer Seam Sealant?
Just a quick question, can I use Sikaflex 221 as an Outer Panel Sealant as well as an adhesive for poptop roof, panel to frame bracket etc?
I see people recommend 3M 8115 but had heard it has cause some problems so just wondering what people mainly use now?
Also can I check I understand the process correctly:
[*]Clean out seams as best as possible
[*]Treat with vactan
[*]Spray primer into seams
[*]Outer Seam sealant (thin bead)
[*]Primer
[*]Paint
Thanks

Don't forget the rear of the seam if you can get to it.
It did a little test a few months ago. Well I call it a test but the truth is I forgot to clean the rear of a seam. Cleaned and treated the front of the seam and within a few weeks the rust was back. So I then remembered to clean the seam again, front and back; now it is still rust free.
What are you cleaning the seams out with?
Jon.

Well some I will be replacing panel so cleaning back to metal, the bits I cannot will have to be wire wheel, stanley knife etc. As best as I can without a grit blaster.
My main confusion is what to use on the outer seams, I will have a lot of sikaflex about as I am going to re attach my pop top with it but not sure if it is suitable.
Cheers

I am sure someone will advise on the exact stuff to use. I got some stuff called Soudaflex, half the price of Sikaflex and people on here told me it was good to use.
I got a Dremel for my birthday off the misses and that does a great job. I keep meaning to check Aldi for a cheap grit blaster.
Good luck with that!

Hi,
I use 221.
-cur out all the gunk.
-Fertan all the seam (good feeling when you see it dribble inside the van)
- Leave for a day or 2.
- Fertan again. Leave to dry to dusty texture.
- brush with stiff bush
- clean with http://www.3mselect.co.uk/p-2239-3m-gen ... e-tin.aspx
- Apply coat of ferpox (1k epoxy primer)
- Let dry
- Just beofre beading 221 wipe with IPA - Gives 221 an extra sticky kick.
- bead
- let dry
- 1k ferpox over that.

Can I ask what IPA is and also where can you get ferpox from?

I use a spray IPA. Used to use it to clean optical fibre back in the day.

The stuff is great for that final clean and evaporates instantly.
Ferpox: I get it from a shop in Aachen Germany so might be a trek for you. but you can try here http://www.fertan.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Sikaflex 221 as Outer Seam Sealant?
Just to add. I gently blow air into the seam to get maximum penetration of the Fertan
