So, the short of it is this, following the fitting of a 'reconditioned' engine I find myself minus working engine, plus thanks to the replacement of my sump with a cracked one and various other bodged/broken bits just fitting a better recon engine may be a rather expensive option given the need to supply turbo, sump etc from the old engine.
What the hell to do? Was considering a TDI conversion but that seems to be opening another can of worms (not much of a spannerer). Is there anyway of going from where I am back to a decent working van without spending thousands more than I can hope to get back (at some point). Van is an '89 westy pop-top...
Any advice gratefully received!
Cheers...

Who fitted your reconditioned engine? I would say at this point that the fitters are responsible for it not being as it should. Or, did you buy the engine from someone who said it was reconditioned, and then paid someone else to fit it?

Nope, the fitters supplied the engine. I just have zero confidence that anyone who would do the job as badly would actually improve things significantly with a second visit. They've offered money back if I return the engine, but of course that still leaves me without an engine, and without sump, turbo, etc. Still probably best option, it's how to proceed from there that has me stumped...

Well in theory, but what chance of a good resolution? Surely just another layer of bodges...

If the product is not 'fit for purpose' and has failed within the warranty period and subject to the conditions of the warranty you should receive a satisfactory resolution or (possibly) a full refund and be able to go elsewhere.
