Yep, there is a campsite up at wasdale head, it is a national trust site. We stayed on it last october for a couple of nights. It's ok, there are hookups if you need it and the village is about 20minutes walk up the road, but take a good torch as there are no lights and the locals know the road so don't hang around. The pub there, the wasdale head, is good, so is the food. The facilities are good on the site and the walks off the campsite are good. There is another campsite in Nether Wasdale which is reported to be good and there are a couple of pubs there, both of which are really good. We stayed there at the local hotel last summer so we came back in the camper later on for a short break. I recommend you head in from ravenglass rather than Birker Fell as there are a couple of steep sections that may challenge some vans. Explorer map OL 6 gives good coverage of the area. Geoff.

My OH and I absolutely love this site - where he proposed to me

As said above, has hook ups and a small shop. Walking is simply stunning and the pub is good too!

Just be aware they are running on a generator at the moment due to the long term electricity fault under the lake and a couple of the hook up bays are in noise distance of the generator. The ones in the woods are not tho x

You can park overnight on the village green for free! We did this last year after staying on the Nat Trust site for 3 nights when weather was so good we wanted to stay an extra night but the camp site was already fully booked. The "facilities" aren't up to much but the beer in the pub is great:-) The views from the green are wonderful.

We took the kids over the weekend and they loved it! The campsite is lovely although the village green is just as nice and closer to the pub, there were a few vans wild camping down by the lake as well. Definatly worth the trip, we came back over Birker fell, getting up was alright it was getting down without cooking the brakes that was the problem.

Watch out for the places by the lakeshore. They are supposed to have no camping signs but people keep pinching them. We once got a knock on our van door at 6.30am from the warden. Luckily the NT site was closed to vehicles at the time (for embarrassment sake)
