Automatic gearbox, stays in 2nd

Post by jgb7573 »

Hi all,

I have a watercooled 1.9 DG, 1985 with automatic gearbox. Recently it has taken to refusing to change up into top gear. It starts in 1st, goes to second between 15 and 20mph and then stays there.

Do I need a new gearbox?

John

When mine did this it was the ATF filter. It had disintegrated and clogged up the oil ways. And yes i had to replace the box

as said, and autos are very particular about fluid and cleanliness, dont let them run low, and if your fluid smells burnt then  you will be too

Well I checked the level this evening. The oil was up at the twist in the dipstick when the engine was cold and stationary. When I rechecked as instructed by friend Haynes (at operating temperature, engine running) the level was still significantly higher than the maximum level, but below the twist. No idea whether this could cause the problem with changing into 3rd, but at least the oil looks nice and clean. So out with the siphon this weekend and see what difference that makes. I'll then need to keep a closer eye on the level to see if creeps back up again, or whether it was overfilled at its last service.

Fingers crossed.

You would do better if you drained the ATF.(Big nut at base of filler)Removed the ATF pan.checked the filter. And put the correct amount of ATF back in.Order a new filter and pan gasket from brickwerks first though.
