clutch slip
hi can anyone advise, i have a problem when on long journys the clutch starts to slip and is nearly impossible to get into gear and ive already snapped the gear lever off complealy in my hands while stuck in traffic on the motorway heavyhanded i know ha , but lucky it snapped in 3rd and was able to crawl off the motorway ! so my question is is the cluctch slipping for another reson other than just wear on the clutch because there is an oil leak at the back of the engine opp gearbox end, could this be the problem ? also jumps out of second when i lift the trottle could this be a clutch issue or would it be a gearbox build. any help will be appreciated

If you have a front crankshaft oil seal leaking it usually drips onto the rear face of the flywheel and it'll be sprayed outwards and visible through the inspection port in the engine bay. Probably also dripping from below the bellhousing.
Sounds like you have worn gearbox and/or synchro hub issues going on ... wait for Aidan to comment on that though. Have you checked and changed the gearbox oil ? The drain magnet will tell the story.

2 different problems there. As Ian says, oil on the clutch will make it slip, but the clutch binding causing the gear change problem is a different matter. Opposite ends of the spectrum those 2 problems are.
I reckon the box is going to have to come out (not as big a job as it sounds) so you can inspect the clutch and clutch release mechanism and the oil seal.

It sounds like you have two unrelated problems....the clutch slip and the popping out of 2nd....both warrant gearbox removal, the first is a question of inspection, replace the necessary seals and three part clutch...the second sounds altogether more serious as is excessively worn syncro and or gear shaft enfloat.

well thankyou for all of your help every1 so 2 diff problems thats that then need a crank seal and a sh gearbox i have already purchaced a clutch, thanks again ill post the conclusion

Beware the unknown 'good' s/h gearbox ... for all you know it may be as bad/worse than what you've already got. If you must go that route watch out for one with a warranty or from a club breaker who has a good name to protect.
You may wish to look for the oil splash on the back of the flywheel as I said in my post remember we're diagnosing something we've never even seen.

Err, you say clutch slip , ? sounds more like clutch drag to me, if it was slipping as in worn then you would get the gears no problem but when you boot the motor you will rev and go no place, however if you cant engage gears and by snapping the stick it sounds like you couldnt then your clutch isnt clearing , this could be a fault within the clutch or a master/slave problem. can you elaborate, if 4 speed then I have a brand new stick for sale, still with the vw label on it. lol

Yep, or the spigot bearing ... as I said it needs a closer look.

Dave, don't take this the wrong way, just attempting to help with an unseen diagnosis (as Ian says).
Are you familiar with the difference between "slip" and "drag" as explained by metalmick8y a couple of posts above ?

You don't say what engine you have (slapped wrist) but every which way the box needs to come out so that's your starting point.
Let's assume it's a 1.9 or 2.1 wbxer engine, here's a few parts you'll probably need ...
