track control arm ? bush.

hi folks,advice please,looked at wiki regards this but to be sure do i need to take track rod arm and other bits off and remove track control arm(if this is the track control arm?) to replace this bush(see pics) or can it be done in situ,also does a certain piece have to be tack welded?,how hard a job is it?,ive changed a clutch slave cylinder and other smaller jobs but dont want to end up in the mire,all help greatly appreciated,thanks laurence.http://s1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg5 ... hin/bushs/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

No they don't need to be welded. but you will probably need to remove the whole arm to press them out.

I did mine (using original equipment bushes)in situ, but I've done loads of bushes before, so don't know how you'd get on if you don't have experience.

You can drill loads of holes through the old bush using a 6mm drill bit, then pull it out using a length of threaded rod, washers and a short length of scaffold size tube.

Then you can use the same gear to pull the new bush in, with fairy liquid as lubricant. Pull the bush a little bit too far so the lip pops out the other side, then pull it back a tad to centralise it. My goodness it's TIGHT.

Problem may come lining up the holes to get the bolt back in.

Or use Brickwerks poly bushes. Much easier. Just pop them in.

hi colin,when doing the bush in situ after taking the wheel off and putting the van on a axle stand do you still need to put the jack under the track control arm while changing the bush?,i was gonna use the poly bushs as they look alot easier to fit,thanks for your help/reply,laurence.

As I remember it, with the van jacked up, when you take the bolt out, it all stays more or less where it is, and you have to lever the inner end of the arm down and wedge a lump of wood behind it to get the bush out. The radius rod is quite stiff and holds it all together.

You're going to be pushing and pulling a lot, so make sure the van is very well supported.

Opening an old thread. I thought washing up liq corroded rubber? Any clues as to what size threaded bar and washers needed to put new front lower suspension control arm inner bush?

Some say it does. I've used it for 40 years though. Most of it gets scraped off pulling in the bush. Never had a problem. A thick goo of soap flakes/water is good too.

12mm

I didn't record what size washers I used!
