Engine Mount replacement

Post by Realize »

Hi guys

I have a air cooled westy and need to replace the engine mounts.

Can this be done without taking engine out?

Can any one help with a procedure and let me know any pit falls to avoid.

Cheers Jay

To too hard. You need to put a jack under theengine with a good strong board on it. Jack up just untill the engine lifts an half inch to an inch. Undue bolts, knock mountain out and replace. When nuts are tight lower jack slowly. I imagine a trolley jack would be best.

I did all four of my rear mounts a few weeks back (2.1 MV...same mounts as yours) I found the easiest way was to support the engine with a jack and plank to spread the load and remove the engine support bar (4 bolts/nuts). I snapped 3 of the four but they are just standard high tensile 8mm bolts/nuts so cheap and easy to replace.
Undo the bottom mount nuts and the engine support bar just falls away to allow easy access.

The difficult part is getting to the top nuts...easy if you have the right tools....3/8th drive long extension/universal joint and single hex 13mm socket (or one of those combi sockets with universal joint in one).
Whilst I know the mounts are the same I'm not sure of the access with yours being an Air Cooled. Just take a butches for access to the top mounting nuts...if you can see them without too much restriction then they shouldn't be too difficult.

Thanks' Guys

Sounds like it should be fairly doable, will I need to take exhaust off?

Again I haven't done them on an Aircooled but there was absolutely no need to go anywhere near the exhaust on a W/Cooled...and the ports are in the same place.
