The Rot is setting in

Post by jpee »

Last year Loch Lomond Nat parks authority had a bye law passed banning wild camping on the east side of the loch. Granted there was a lot of problems with littering, noise e.t.c. They are currently looking at extending this ban to lots more areas. Again, instead of proper management and policing, the responsible campers are penalised for the idiotic.
Never sure where I'm going till i get there.

Does not surprise me one bit , We were up last Easter and stayed at the Loch , the picnic area was a rite dump , and the police were patrolling a lot , we ask one officer if it was ok to camp in the van , he look at us and asked if we were in the camper ? and said it was ok as long as we were good and left no mess or disturbed anyone.
Further up the road (still on the Loch side) there were a few lay-bys being used by travellers/ road crews ..
Loch Ness is the same EVERY loch side layby has a sign saying no over night camping or SLEEPING

Saying that get off the tourist trap/route and Scotland won't be a let down EVER

You'll probably find that a lot of cr@p is dumped by sight seeing car drivers (as well as those awfully nice and considerated travelling folk)

I actually don't camp round about the Loch, I do much prefer getting away from the 'honeypot' areas. I just feel the Land Reform (scoland) act which extended our freedom of movement will be slowly eroded. If they stop camping there, these people will just move on somewhere else taking the problem they cause with them and slowly access to the countryside will be eroded and become more difficult. I just feel there must be a better way to manage this behaviour than simply slapping a wholesale ban on an area.

Perhaps some kind of permit system with a reasonable admin fee to be used to better manage the area?
Never sure where I'm going till i get there.

Don't they have a similar system in Norway? Seem to remember having to buy a permit to be allowed to 'free camp' when I planned a trip there a few years ago.

I have been working up in applecross for the last few weeks and there is a lovely spot for wild camping at the end of the bay but the vestate have now put up a no overnight camping sign and when i asked why they said it was because some people that were camping would jump over the wall on the other side of the road and do the toilet and i don't just meen a pee. It just goes to show that one or two idots will spoil it for everyone.
