None VW question! Astra timing belt change

Post by 1_eyed_jim »

Evening all. Trying to save money for a replacement gearbox for the van but the Astra is well over due for a cambelt change.

Astra estate diesel 1.7DTI 2002

Has anyone fitted one of these? Is it really as hard as Haynes is making out (4 spanners)? Can get the kit for £50 but my local garage want £150 to fit.

Thanks

Done a couple of petrols on MK4 Astra's, only real challenge is access but its pretty do'able

Not sure about Diesel, but can't be that much harder surely, biggest issue is stopping crank/pump/cam from moving?

If the garage want 150 thats probs only 3 hours?

Excellent thanks for the video it LOOKS straight forward. Noticed he didn't change any of the pully's that come with the kit. Anyway think I will get one ordered. Any make I should aim to buy eg Gates, dayco FDI etc etc (FDI being the cheapest :D )

Ditto above, I use Gates for aftermarket. Kit should come with a tensioner pulley which I would always change as well. Just one bolt really :)

Get the garage to do it. If you screw up you don't get much new engine for £150.

Ian

Car is only worth £1000 so £150 is a lot to spend on it. I'm feeling confident 8)

Your van has no gearbox at the moment ? I wouldn't take chances on screwing up my other car right now ... but hey, it's your life.
