Just to think a few years back AAZs were the be all and end all and now you seldom see a post about them now (except lloydy whinging like a girl )
just seen above remark No AAZ in my van now, just an empty space........[/quote]
You don't hear about them because they run fine and we don't shout about them AAZ's will out last TDI's will give you guys six months before you are all changing v expensive injectors from washed Diesel.

Interesting that a AAZ will outlast an AFN, do you care to share your knowledge on why it would as I would be interested to find out why?
I will report back in 6 months time to let you know if my injectors have had to be changed, and I am sure all the others wouldnt mind sharing if they have to change the ones in their engines.
AFN TDI in mine since 2003. Been from Alaska to Argentina with a few detours along the way and dragged a trailer to boot. Never let Stewart down as far as i know and the charge cooler is tucked up behind the rear left light. From my knowledge there is 190,000km on this engine now. It did have an overhaul when it came back from the americas.
Surely if the injectors are a problem it would be plastered all over the diesel forums by now?
But on a 150000 mile engine, maybe they are due a rebuild the same as a AAZ would benefit from the same?
I just worked out my average MPG from last weekend with a good mix of everything from green laning, Welsh windy roads and 60-65mph on motorway. I had my roof rack fitted and light bar this time as well as a set of Insa Turbo Dakar tyres (same patten than the old BFG m/t's) and fully loaded with water, food, beers etc to be self sufficient for two nights in the wilds.

Not sure if this bit was in repsonse to my post but to clarify AGAIN i am/was on about intercoolers and NOT chargecoolers

FYI Mark's set up is a air to air intercooler, I'm pretty sure it's the passat one, but it is fitted partially through the 'battery box' behind the rear nearside lights so partially hangs down below the chassis rail and has a squirrel fan fitted - it was a Berd Yager installation
air to air intercooler is still a 'charge cooler' just that there is a shorthand of using the terms intercooler for air to air and chargecooler for water to air
terribly confuding init? can we not all just stick to one set of words to make it easier?
Heres mine anyway. Currently in design stage as Dr Tim has only made them for UN1 boxes so has to redesign etc for a standard T3 box. Have seen figures from when he fitted one to an AFN Doka and was well impressed by before/after data log figures.
As previous. I know the intercooler in the corner has been designed/fitted/sold by people with a lot more brain cells by me but end of the day as a punter i have got to be convinced it works by the use of beofre/after numbers.

I dont think it was... Its a great thread this for those of us that have an interest in the AFN conversion and how each others is done and maybe nab a few ideas off each other along the way. I think I said a little while back about not understanding why people who dont even like diesels chip in for no reason and maybe Lloydy set it streight etc especially if its just for the sake of it and there are lots of other things to talk about if anyone hasnt got an interest in the thread title
Saying that loads of cool people helping with gear ratio questions etc that dont really have any interest in derv but have useful contributions that I personally find very helpful
A few of us now have AFN conversions and to us its exiting and this is the place we like to talk about them, to each other.
i agree with what you said cos your ace you are
who do we know who can write a custom map for a socketed ecuto match any engine mods rather than a generic map?
As possibly one of the earlier conversions done it has proven reliable over quite a long period. Heavy van, big pay load and tested thoroughly. The only problems I have had have been to do with oil leaks. Duff turbo followed by a stress fracture in the oil feed pipe, everything else has been routine maintenance.

Maybe its not happening over your side of the pond lads, and I truly hope it doesn't happen to any of ye, but have heard of lots of reports of TDI injectors failing due to dirty diesel and guys washing the dye out of agricultural (green) and red diesel and then selling it on. Chatting to an AA man a while ago and he said he had seen it a lot on the TDI's, VW included, according to him pump duse injectors are notorious for going. I think its due to the higher tolerences in manufacture and also higher pressures. My sisters jeep had these specific problems,as did quite a few others in the area. As it turned out one of the local garages got busted some time later for selling red diesel and also washed diesel, however my van didn't seem to be affected The older TD's don't seem to be affected and seem to run on almost anything due to their Kalashnikov technology. Hope that explains it

I know it wont be an issue Mark, but as a proven vehicle with many many actual miles traveled, I have to cross reference what has been randomly thrown out there. How have your injectors been?

That won't happen within the Golden Triangle, we live in Surrey, don't ya know!!
But even still, "pooh" fuel can affect any injector. Running your van really low on fuel can have similar bad effects.
Etdi will probably suffer more from ECU throwing up faults.
