Ball Joint Rubbers
I have been asking this over at the Syncro forum "Getting it back together"
but maybe this is a broader readership here.
Doesnt seem to be Syncro specific either.
Having just failed the MOT on the seals on my lower ball joints being cracked,
as the ball joints are perfect,
I am hoping to pick up some decent new seals on their own.
Lee has suggested this place: http://www.balljointboots.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The largest one they stock is:
"Approximate hole sizes
35 mm and 12.5 mm,
Height 30 mm"
They are very cheap!
JK sell some..
Baxters only sell the complete units..
Has anyone got experience of buying boots for ball joints,
and got recommendations please?

Re: Ball Joint Rubbers
Bought a pack of 5 ball joint rubbers from my local motor factors, Mill Autos.
They had a range of three sizes and sold them in packs of five only.
So I will let you know later wether they fit, I got the largest size...

Re: Ball Joint Rubbers
Got all the front end in the air wheels off and all the nuts and bolts freed up.
The ball joint splitter I have is not large enough to get onto the bottom ball joint..
Will it help to undo the top one at the same time?
Any tips on getting the bottom one separated?
I dont want to damage it as I am only replacing the rubber boots.
Thanks

Re: Ball Joint Rubbers
Got no experience of buying just the boots, but if your going to the trouble of getting to the point so you can change the boot, why would you not change the complete joint and you won't have to mess again for a good while. My opinion purely but just seems the wrong way to do the job. how long have they been split, how much dirt/water etc has gone in there. Prob 20+ yeras old if they haven't ben changed before.
Re: Ball Joint Rubbers
Mine were fitted last year but the boots have split already.

Re: Ball Joint Rubbers
the boots will only split if damaged when joints fitted or the rubber perishes. If only fitted last year, i would suggest my first theory.

Re: Ball Joint Rubbers
Kit, where did you get yours,
did they get done as complete units or just the boots?
BRBus, I get what you are saying, and agree.
The general condition of all is good, and the boots fail MOT now at the faintest crack.
I will come back to it and refurbish the entire front end when its time.
My feeling is that the other bits will all need doing together then..

Re: Ball Joint Rubbers
They were GSF rubbish and split after a month or two.

Re: Ball Joint Rubbers
Hope they fit for you, but aren't new ball joints only £25? (for good ones) If you are going to all this effort of removing the old, why not fit new ones?
