I'm not particularly mechanically minded but I wondered if anyone might be able to help. When I was looking over the engine earlier I noticed that one of the vacuum pipes was detached from the vacuum advance and had a screw in the end of the vacuum pipe to the back of the carb. Should it be attached to the advance? What would the screw in the end be doing and what would happen if I re attached it? I would appreciate any thoughts before I do anything that might blow up the engine (knowing my luck)
The screw has been put in to blank off the vac pipe and stop it sucking air in (weakening the mixture). It's been done for a reason I would guess the vac can on the dizzie is leaking so the previous owner blanked it off.

Mmm.. that pipe with the screw should be attached to the vac unit on the dizzy.. but that needs to be checked thats its working properly.. But the timing should be checked too., as you really dont know what the frell is going on in there.. and what "adjustments" someone has done...
When pulling out of a junction or roundabaout etc, does it often "drop dead" and fluff, like its going to stall??.. Typical symptom of failed/dissconnected vac advance..
Thanks for the thoughts,It kind of lags a bit but I thought it was the holes in the backbox, I patched them up and it has improved a bit II just thought the lag was part of the deal with the van. Would it be better of the vacuum dizzy needs replacing to swap for a 009 or one without the vacuum?
Fix it... fit a new vac advance if you have too..... I would strongly recomend you DO NOT fit an 009.......... they are crap...... replace the eectronic system at your peril...
A correctly set up and functioning std system works exceedingly well...
Take off the distributor cap and connect a pipe to the vac can and suck it. You should see the innards of the dizzie move around. If you can suck with no resistance then the vac can is U/S. If this is the case either live with it or get a new vac can. Fitting a 009 won't make a difference because with the vac can disconnected that's effectively what you've got fitted now. A dizzie with only a mechanical advance.
