Whats this part?

Post by Fluffenzepupple »

Can anyone tell me what this coil thingy is please and what its meant to connect to? I've just had my engine back after being repaired and during the installation we discovered the wire which comes out from this coil has been cut at some point (at the other end obviously), and we have no idea what its supposed to be connected to!

It looks like it was cut some time ago, so i can only assume its not essential to the running, but thats purely a guess and it would be nice to know what its supposed to do, it must be there for a reason!!

Its a 1981 2.0 CU Aircooled

Cheers in advance :)

It's the thermostat, it operates the cooling diverter flaps inside the tinware and is very important.
Was the picture taken with the engine hot or cold? If cold then it's knackered - it should only be expanded to it's fullest, (like your picture), when it's hot.

See this page for an explanation and pictures.

Ah, excellent :?

Thanks for the speedy reply very much appreciated, would I be correct in thinking then that the wire being cut keeps the flaps open? Better than being stuck closed I guess lol

Overheating. (2.0l air-cooled) Looses power, smokes, engine feels "tight" - faulty thermostat system, either the thermostat has expired, the cable has snapped or the ducting fins are jammed, the system should fail safe with a spring keeping the flaps open, but springs break. Get it checked. Also make sure the rubber engine bay seal is in good order.
