after doing a bit of reading on here, i'm getting the impression that camping in spain isnt as popular as in france, and that you should do your research before going, in terms of campsites etc. just wondering if anyone could recomend a good campsite book for spain?
thanks,

They're not THAT few-and-far-between. You'll be fine. If you're going out of season, take the ACSI discount book.

At the first site you get to (mebbe plan that in advance - you going through France or getting a ferry straight to Bilbao or Santander?), you should be able to buy the big thick book of ALL Iberian campsites. It's not really all Iberian campsites - it may very well be all Spanish and a smattering of Portuguese, but the Portuguese publish a similar book themselves...
If you're going via Bilbao, then Camping Playa Arenillas at Islares (a bit west of the city) looked to us to be by far and away the best site for the city, but it's not THAT exciting... This one was much better, and fairly well placed for Santander.

Acsi book is handy for over winter, September onwards iirc. It gives you a card for discounted pitches in Europe at a set price, Costs about £16 (or it did last tie I had chance to use one
). E D I T - Just checked, it's got cheaper!
Have a lookhere
Doesn't work on all sites but it's a good starter, and still more popular with German & Dutch campers than Brits, so the sites are of a good standard
Also now it includes a Carnet for ID & insurance purposes on sites, so you don't need a seperate one from the AA or whoever you used to get them from

Hey Kathy shack,
We used ACSI book, Alan Rogers (always had nice sites) also AA and on occasion Lonely Planet. Tho we usually used the internet to check that they were open or to see if we could find any others. There are areas where camp sites are few and far between, it is not as easy to find over night aires as in France....tho saying that the Spanish are not as anal as the English at moving you on if you are parking up late just til the morning.
We stayed at this camp site in San Sebastian - it is a few KM´s above the town but there is a bus and at this time you could park in the town - we stayed at fiesta time and the town was heaving!

Are you getting the Ferry to Spain or Dover-Calais Kathy? If your doing the french ferry are you driving down from Bolton and doing an over night near Dover then getting the early ferry?
