16" crewcab ELW FTA auction

Post by Synkraut »

This is one of the four flatroofed 16" crewcabs prototypes VW built being auctioned through VEBEG. There is another one in red stationed at the same German airforce base that the Volkswagen Museum has alledgedly reserved for the same price this one brings at the auction in order to restore and exhibit it.

These four were custom made with the flat roof (height requirement for airlift transport and large "roof lid"). They have fixing points to be dropped by parachute, too. Car is a non-runner (engine (cylinder head), rear transmission (2nd and 3rd gear), rust) but surely a worthy project...

It's not going to be cheap Aidan - there's quite a few people drooling over it on the IG16 Forum and quite a few driving by the air force base to have a closer look (you could think it's the holy grail from what some of them are posting). The main concern in the forum seems to be that it should go to a collector who is willing (and able) to restore it to the original condition and preserve it that way (of course that's a lie - they all just want to have it for themselves  ).

I think I'll go and buy a lottery ticket now....

Here's what I found in different forums, Lee. They were custom built by VW as military fire brigade squad leader cars (supposedly four 16" and one 14" model) to be tested for this use in competition with the Mercedes G. They won the test but this coincided with VWs decision to end the production of the t25 syncro. So these remained the only flatroofs. The particular one that is for sale was stationed in KAIA Airbase/Kabul around 2005. There's more piccies of it in one of the IG 16" threads that show it in some more detail (also shows that there's quite a bit of work to do on it).

That's a lot of tooling up to only produce four roof pressings.
A great thing to own use and show, don't suppose we'll see it doing the lanes though
German army 16 with canopy in field paint has always been what i hope will come my way at some point
Hope the new owner will let me have a go
I recon it's got a fair chance of turning up in our yard the way that things have been going
