Driveshafts 1986 DG1900

Got a clunking nearside driveshaft on my 1986 1900dg. Only clunks for the first five or so miles then quietens. My way of testing was by grabbing hold of shaft and was able to rotate it back and forth a little...so I guess there is play involved.

A friend sent me a good spare one from his doomed camper. Does it matter which way round it goes as he didnt mark it up? By the look of the boots the dryer (gearbox gaiter is greasy?) of the two most likely is wheel side in my opinon?

For what they cost just fit new. People seem to be obsessing about reconditioning CV joints ... just buy new, life's too short and if they've started clicking once there is wear that can't be undone by merely cleaning and regreasing. "I can no longer hear them so the wear has gone" it's a head in the sand approach and BAD practice.

Ahhh you wealthy northerner's flashing yer cash about ....but I hear what you are saying. New shafts are about £120.00

Will have a look about for discount

Very good

I never skrimp on safety and cannot see the point in postponing the inevitable when something's obviously worn ... I dislike the Russian Roulette approach to driving a 20-odd year old vehicle.

Check the shaft splines by all means but it's normally the CV joint that goes.

Very true indeed. Getting the old shaft out will probably the most difficult bit so I intend to do it once and do it right. Will refurb spare with new ends and swap over

worth noting that the shafts DO wear

i had one on my own van that stripped the splines, just a gentle pull away from the lights and nothing!

check the length of the splines as its not all used and you can gauge the wear and how much the joint rocks on the splines.
