Hi Mark D, I wish I had an answer but I'm in the same position - cant find a side rack for my board!!!
When I bought the van it had a side rack of sorts - uprights on either side of the van resting in the gutters, these were held in place by clamps on the gutters, and threaded bar linking the uprights across the roof. On one side the uprights were fitted with curved arms to carry the board. The whole contraption looked complete pants in my opinion, and with my van about to go for welding and painting I've taken them off.
I've seen some smart racks on German vans, nice aluminium fittings that bolt through the high top - avoiding a lot of weight and unsightliness. Never had the chance to ask anyone about them though.
this what i got on my van. No drilling through hi-top involved. Think they look ok to me. not sure that the person who made them does them anymore but a friend is in process of making his own as he had no joy in sourcing any for his van.

Life is like a grinding wheel, it can polish you up or wear you down - it depends what you are made of !
like the look of that fitting m8. you will have to keeps us informed if your mate comes up with a solution ? perhaps even a photo it could give us insperation to come up with a way of getting the board out of the van
There is a guy who posts on here occassionally that makes them. He calls them J-Bars, and he sells them for 80 quid. He lives up in the northwest. If you search the archives, you might find more info on it. Sorry to be so vague, but I can't remember his name or number.
