Post by dave friday »

Morning all,the oil buzzer went off on a very steep down hill track, the van was in 'g' and the engine revs quite high, this is the first time that the buzzer has sounded.
Any comments?Ta.

Sounds like the oil pump got starved for a moment. Hate to ask but is the sump oil level correct i.e. at high mark?

Well the oil level was nearer to the low mark than the high mark,so i recon your right [my daughter said perhaps the oil is a bit low?].
The oil pressure has allways been a bit odd,the gauge flicks about [when at 65 ish on the motorway] and when the oil is below half way between the two marks on the dipstick.
Any more comments please.

just had kind of thw same problem but mine was more random so i stuck in a new oil pump from gsf and a new oil pressure sensor(the grey one on the filter housing)
and that seemed to do it.

so now that my oil pressure is tip top im chasing down small oil leaks everywhere!!! never ending story
good luck :ok

hi barry i trust all is well, apart from this little problem.

what oil pressure reading are you getting once the engine is warm, buy warm i mean after a good 15-20 mins of driving, through the rev range.
for example on my engine

oil temp on the gauge @80c oil pressure at tick over aprox 950rpm oil pressure is 3bar aprox 45pis

as soon as the revs increase above 1500rpm the pressure increases to 4bar aprox 60psi

these readings are from vdo gauges and senders.

Hi Neil, yea we are all good ,I hope you and yours are too,
The oil pressure seems to be more or less the same as just after re-build 40,000mls ago.
Oil pressure taken from the front of the cylinder head [hot 750rpm]; 1bar 3,000rpm;2.5bar.
Oil temp[oil filter housing] after a long hill[ third gear flat out] 100deg c.
Thanks all for your comments/suggestions.

Not very impressive pressures, fluttering oil pressure at speed means either that the pressure relief valve is dicky (spring gone soft) or bottom end wear, so big end or mains are bleeding off to excess. Does it "rumble" when revved in neutral and when hot?
I think you need one of my modified oil pumps to improve matters, but it won't hold up an engine with worn bearings for too long.

Thanks silverbullet, the flutter only happens when the oil level gets to about 3mil above the lower dipstick mark.
No rumbling noises, the engine seems quiet [for a Diesel].
Whats different about your oil pump?
