in tip top condition there are no clear winners
more depends on present condition ,service history , how hard a life its had and your intentions.
water cooled wil help if you plan any engine upgrades in the future post 87 vans have all the latest stuff fitted and some parts are easier to source -(suspension , cooling , wiring , brakes , locks ect) some early parts are long obsolete more so than later stuff
if they havent got it fitted then post 87 vans were more ready to fit the optional/ posh stuff

Personally speaking I think the 2.1i DJ is the best engine for power and sound.

Re: air or water cooled 20ltr t25
Thanks for the advice people. we have bought a 1984 20ltr water cooled t25 with 37000 genuine miles and all the paperwork to back it up ,last owner had it 10 years doing only 1000 miles per year between mots. lots of receipts for work and service items so mechanically very good body sound but paint is a little tired. we are looking forward to getting to know some of you and picking your brains.

You will not get many miles to the gallon (or should that be gallons per mile) with a 20 litre engine. Normally they are around 2 litres.

Re: air or water cooled 20ltr t25
have to agree given the choice ^^^ whs
especially if i was going to run it standard , the 2.1 also means it came with at least a couple of options , even the panel van!
but if your planning an engine conversion (later diesel ect) then a 1.6td will be a better option- saving lots of later hassle
if your planning on your own interior/ refit then ideally a caravelle GL (this is what people try to convert there vans to anyhow) as they come already kitted out
