Started Herbetsy on Tuesday eve for a little run, she was a little lumpy (was cold). 5 mins up the road blue smoke, got home stopped engine. Looked at dip stick and found grey mayonnaise Nooooooooo. :cry: expansion tank empty. Today drained all sludge flushed engine and coolent system, stripped off carb (needs new gaskets anyway).
My Plan is to remove engine and strip top half.
Would appreciate any thoughts, ideas and advice to ease the pain :cry:

Give us a clue petrol/diesel? Presuming petrol.DG(1.9), DJ(2,1)? :)

When you say drained sludge, was there actualy sludge in the sump or just the filler?

Sorry, yeah it's a 1.9l DG petrol. I meant to say that I haven't flushed the engine yet, just the cooling system, that was a mix of antifreeze, water and radweld (i think from the colour!) When I drained the sump, that was a mess... Grey thick mayonnaise. Not sure whether to flush engine or just to strip down????

Sounds like your liner to case "O" ring seal(s) have failed :(

Oh, has it got an oil cooler (unlikely on a DG but you never know)

I am afraid that you might need to be prepared for the worst.
Stripping and successfully repairing these engines is a can of worms :twisted:

Yep I have started looking for a replacement, would love to rebuild but I need to be realistic! Any recommendations for recon engines?
I emailed a engine rebuild place and he quoted £900 + £175 for delivery and installation (Cheap I thought, and he wasn't recommended. So I'm a little wary.)

Many on here have engines from Elite ( http://www.elitevw.com/products.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) They are a similar price and have a 2 year guarantee. Most folk rate them and there engines quite well.

If at all possible I would get them (or one of there agents) to fit it, then there cannot be any quibbles about the guarantee because you fitted something incorrectly (say ignition timing, coolant air locks etc)

I take it your cooling system has gunge in it too ? If so then remember that it will take ages and LOTS of flushings before it runs clear, so don't put anti-freeze in straight away (but delay all this until the risk of freezing up is over ?)

On the other hand, good used engines turn up on here quite often. I got one off here for £300 when all this happened to me a few years ago and it is still going strong :)

You could do as I did and strip the old engine down at your leisure (once you have a replacement fitted). This could just be to learn about them, to get a "spare" or even sell it to recoup some money (I did the latter ;) )

Thanks for all your advice and help. I have started stripping her down so I can remove engine, just repeatedly flushing the coolent system.
We're going in.... wish us luck!!!!

btw, PlusGas = http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PlusGas-Large ... 35ba165758" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; NOT WD40 ;) and heat from a gas blow torch (~£10 from Wicks or B&Q) is what you need for rusty nuts and bolts

Best way to remove the head bolts is with a gentle heat from a torch and an air impact wrench. Usually works with no breakages. Good luck !

Hi all,
Have removed engine from bus and stripped off both heads, 1 of the head studs had been snapped previous to me opening it up and left to rattle around in there. And to make matters worse its snapped at the deep end, im not to sure what to do about it. Any ideas?
Also engine full of radweld, water and mayo oil, the radweld being something i wouldnt recommend to any one...
I am going to remove piston liners and clean out with parafin? What should i be looking out for, as im going to change all gaskets, but not so sure about rings, liners and maybe pistons?

is there some stud showing?
They are not in very tight but they have been in a long time.
A local engineering shop should be able to help if you can't get something on it.
I would suggest welding some thing to the busted stud and try to turn it

Hi, good luck getting the stud out :ok

You will need the full set of "O" rings, get them from Brickwerks where the quality is good and you get the CORRECT sealant that you need to use.

Morning all
The head bolt has snapped a part way down on the bottom thread with the other part hiding in crank case i guess, but havnt dare look yet. Is it worth me attempting to change all head bolts at the same time or am i asking for more trouble, as im now a bit paranoid about when i put heads back on, another may snap as they look old and a bit rusty?
I also found one of the engine mounting studs had snapped { again previous to me, im hopeing to make a better job than others attempts } but i managed to get that out with some stilsons.
Any ideas on cost of a removal by said type companys?

if you get the stud out then buy a full set.
they ain't in tight so they come out easy
