OIL PROBLEM T25 Turbo Diesel- Help?????

Post by steamboatbilly76 »

Hi I have the above van - so here's the deal I need your help..............

It has done 75,000 original miles - doesn't smoke, runs like a dream but uses a serious amount of oil ............ Here's an idea I have used 4 litres in the last 800 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Other info

It starts like a dream
I am using 15 40 mineral oil
It is absolutely bone dry with no leaks

Other interesting fact - it will drive perfectly at 60 mph on a motorway run for say a good 2 hours and the moment I slow down to pull into a service station the oil alarm goes off for around 30secs then stops (I know they are sensitive but I think this links into somehow the oil problem)

So what could it be

piston Rings?
Turbo on it's way out or something else?

All answers i'm desperate - I can keep topping it up but want to get on top of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please help thanks

Steamboat

Hiya Steamboat....well i got the same prob....only i did av oil leak at front of engine..fixed that...still using oil though...1 litre every 70 miles....the garage tells me its noqw got to be piston rings...so shes going in on Wednsaday i think?....i had a replacement ( crashed passat 19td)...swoppped for my 1600 diesel...she pulls great...runs great...no smoke..but uses the oil...so im hoping all will be fine after new rings. :(

The alarm going off idicates 'low oil pressure' very serious and needs checking out with an oil pressure gauge. Excessive oil consumption...well get the oil pressure checked first but the oil must be being burnt, so rings/turbo seals.

I'd be interested to hear if piston rings were your problem. I've just put in 7 litres on a 800 mile trip from the UK to the French Alps (in my lle) and am wondering what the most likely cause of this high usage is (no leaks).
thanks in advance for any further info.
