Just some thoughts (assuming its a 2.1 DJ):
# was it fully warmed up when timing and tick over set?
# was it correctly timed for grade of fuel?
# were the correct plugs disconnected and connected together and were the correct vacuum lines disconnected and blocked off? (See Haynes manual for exactly what I mean here)
# is the idle speed adjustment (on the throttle valve switch) worn and run out of adjustment?
# another element that caught me out when I first had mine was that water got into the idle speed stabilisation unit (situated in front of rear off side light cluster). I had to carefully open it up, dry it out slowly with a hair dryer and seal it up again. Then cable tied it up out of the way of water.

Unlike many on here I am not an engineer - just an enthusiastic amateur. No doubt others who do this stuff for a living will have other ideas.

Hope this helps. I'll be interested to see how you get on. :ok

thanks, think il start by checking the timing as the last owner was putting lead subsitute in,so not sure what grade of fuel he was putting in.I think there may be something missing on the throttle linkage,so i need to see somebody elses engine or a picture or 2.thanks
