hi,
We are planning an off road weekend based at one location, which will enable drivers to have a full day and a half of driving.
Nothing finalised yet but watch this space. Check these guys out who are in the N.Devon area.....looks fairly full if your worried about bodywork etc, but they may have easier routes. (Sun) 4x4 Adventures Drive Round Day Bampton, Devon

We're down there this this Thursday - Monday camping and would like to hear if you hear of any good lanes. Short of that I'll be getting out OS..

Where are you going exactly. There are lots of drivable lanes around Bampton, and a smattering along the Devon edge of Exmoor. Couple of nice deep valley and fordings between Tiverton and Dulverton. Then theres Tarr Steps Ford.

Devon has the most green lanes of any county.

With a T4 you would need to be very selective. Only a few I think would be possible without a backup plan. The best I can think of for a T4 are on Dartmoor, a couple of epic 3 mile long lanes with beautiful views.

Without hijacking, I'm starting in Ilfracombe, and going down through Dartmoor and last night near Tavistock.

The closest lane to Ilfracombe is a scenic lane that heads from Langleigh along the coast to the West. From SS510469.

Then through Englands largest onshore windfarm. Start at Burland Cross head SW over Fullabrook Down from SS539415.

Head around to Goodleigh for a 3 mile lane heading East starting at SS603344. Lots of marked Byways around here.

Then on Dartmoor.

Starting at the North head pf the A3o at Woodleigh Junction, head south from Cheriton Bishop to marked byway that descends into the Teign Valley from 781912. At bottom head west to Fingle Bridge (nice pub) over the bridge and up the zigzag hill (my favorite lane) to Cranbrook Castle.

Head to North Bovey and take the byway heading east over Dickford Bridge, 741836.

Head to Manaton and Water for the next best lane. Start at the Beckhams farm at 764804 and enjoy, both ways preferably.
This is the little bridge at the bottom.

This is what it is like in the ice and snow going up towards Water.

Then there is the Widecombe by-pass.

Start at 731776 and follow track with care as can be boggy across Bonehill Down below Chinkwell Tor and Honeybag Tor. The last decent down to the road at 724788 can be slippery and this lane is definately worth taking your time along. This is open moor, so stay on the track. There are no hedges or markings except the track markings on the os map. Very pretty and on the moor.

Obviously risk asses each lane and my rule for driving alone is that you dont drive down something that you cant easily reverse and turn around in. If your last turning point was 300 meters away down a tight lane then that is going to take some time. The Dartmoor lanes are fine at the moment. Drove them all last weekend.

You can descend Simms if you are brave.

At Ilsington start at crossroads at 784754. Head towards the village. The roads either side of the cross roads are all drivable.

Hope this is a starter for you, there are so many lanes to choose from.

Simon.

For the T4 I would definitely do the Dartmoor ones. All should be fine.

thank's for this great info !

i ended up checking a few lane's and going on to google earth to check them out and memorise them, i also ran a few on my bike to check them first, i don't really like the idea of doing them all on my own! would be good to go with other's i need to come to one of your event's really! some of them are fun and really close to the house, but my van's a bit too nice for it and big and it's a fine line between being easy and too much of a challenge! it's a daily driver an i can't afford to break it!

what map's are the best ?

your going to be round my neck of the wood's mule. get in contact if you want!
