Petrol to AFN ETDi

i think a lot of people totally miss the point about the tdi. its not all about the economy, its about the way they drive.

turbo torque with no lag makes for such a relaxed drive now i`ve gone etdi over mtdi i think i would still be happy if it was no better on fuel than the 2.1 mv.

going to carry a few spares now with the "e" that i wouldn`t have to with the "m". if i go to africa i`ll just carry the mtdi pump and bracket and swap over. worst case

It's an interesting discussion, that's for certain. Of course it's not all about one single characteristic, pick from any of the following:
mpg, range, pence/mile, convenience, longevity/reliability, serviceability, NVH, the list goes on.

It's what the individual demands from their wagon. We're all different, no-one is correct or wrong. Repeat en masse:

"That's right! We're all individuals"

"Now f### off!"

"How should we f### off?"

wish it was 9-5 rather than 8-7, 7 days a week at the mo and I wish the parts were still readily available from VW and a lot cheaper, as it is even the mainshaft circlip isn't readily available in europe and I've only 2 left and of course VW use a non standard size Someone in Germany has been buying up classic's stock and now wants 4 times the price for the stuff

20mm lift on the front now (Dai I'll do the measurements again over the weekend once it's settled) with the new brake discs and pads that have been on the shelf for 18 months and the cv protectors and back plates from brickie finally fitted, reallignment over the weekend and then run it all in and into Simon for a final allignment after Dubfreeze

That is quite a big difference Tom.

My house to Russels house (about 600km) was done in two vehicles recently of exaclty the same type.

My Westy with an aaz, on 215/75/15 bfg tyres did it on one tank.
LHD's Westy with a 1.9 dg on 215/75/15 bfg tyres did it on one and three quarters of a tank.

I am doing the same trip in a week or so in exactly the same vehicle type with the same tyres and will add the figures.

I just got back from picking the Westy up and all I can say is HOLY COW!!! Until I got on the Motorway it was hard to really appreciate how different it is to anything else I have driven. It reminds me of the power bands you get on motorbikes, your pulling up hills a good un the if you just press the peddle right down WHAM!!!! even more power I said I would add the fuel figures when I did the trip so here goes,

423 miles done,
55 liters of fuel used,
35mpg
18.71ppm

I have tyres with a much bigger rolling radius than the 215/75/15's going on as soon as I wake up and get on it in the morning before work so that should up the gearing a bit and get some more MPG. Rpm with 5.43 fd and the 215/75/15's was 3400rpm doing 57mph. All the milage figures are worked out on the sat nav as were the speeds driven. I did around the 60mph mark at cruzing speeds and did most, if not every long hill (inc over Cumbria and that long hill on the M40 at Oxford) at accelerating speeds up to 65mph with my foot not to the floor just because I could and it was a novelty. I also put it in 4th gear when I got on the motorway at Glasgow and changed down to third when I got onto the A3 (about 400 miles later) to go round the roundabout.

They are good! That's very impressive MPG. I think you MPG will decrease with larger tyres because you will drive it fasster, creating more wind resistance.

I now drive mine like it is a modern van, not a 24 year old classic. Cruise a 65mph. Saturday I was late for work so 75mph on the A3 with power in reserve.
