check you fuel delivery, i had the very same symptoms with a worn out fuel pump.
ALso check the length of the pushrod that operates the pump, as they get shorter with age!

Thanks Kev, I started with the inline fuel filters then the plugs and all 5 leads, distributor cap, air filter, coil and not sure what it's called but it's an electrical component on the left hand bulk head possibly a regulator to be honest I'm not mechanically minded just trying to keep the cost down. My symptoms were exactly as Hives was describing it was asthough he was talking about my bus, I've not yet started with the carb due to an ever growing list of other problems but not not willing to give up yet.

Sorry forgot to put commas in. There was two inline fuel filter, one was 6 inch from the tank and the other was between the fuel pump and the carb

you don't need two filters it causes restriction
Remove the one in the engine bay asap

as you're not up to anything else by your own admission, the carburettor needs to be looked at to eliminate it's ability or disability to deliver fuel.
The fuel pump and pushrod should be replaced as a matter of course in my view

while we're on the subject of easy things to check
look to your vacuum lines
Distributor lines
brake servo hose
gaskets..

if they leak air into the manifold, then it's not helping your engine when the choke comes off

Thanks very much for the advice, it dose seem to be when the choke turns off, from a cold start it would climb any hill but when warm and under load it's as though it's starving itself of fuel, also noticed in these colder months the problem not occurring but that's probably due mainly to knowing its limits and not having any faith or confidence in going too far in the old bus.

does it backfire or make popping noises sometimes, maybe when you are going down hill or decelerating?

When going down hill in 2nd gear without revs it pops a tad but wouldn't call it a backfire or wouldn't say it ever caused me any concern. I've just renewed my starter motor but before it packed up totally it was turning over very slowly and popping at the same time which did make me worry a bit. There seems to be a lot of oil around the top of the engine not sure if it's coming from the crankcase breather but it's around the carb and wherever it can settle could this be part of the problem? I'm just hoping thats not something major but was hoping to resolve one fault at a time.

the popping you hear is a classic symptom of an induction air leak.

what happens is... when the enrichment of the mixture stops after the choke flap opens, the mixture is weakened by the unwanted air. this will cause an engine to stall, falter, misfire, or all three.

Tracing an air leak can prove elusive, especially if there's more than one.
places to look are..
choke pull down unit diaphragm.
secondary throttle diaphragm.
vacuum hose connections
brake servo hose.
brake servo one way valve
distributor diaphragm.

most likely suspect
vacuum hose connections
brake servo hose (braided type)

Thanks very much for all the advice, my lack of mechanical knowledge Has become even more apparent to myself, I thought id pretty much covered it with the general service, i will try all those suggestions and they are very much appreciated.
