Ok so clutch slave cylinder replaced and all well... Nearly lol
So now I have a grind when changing into 3rd gear. Now when I was tying to get it off the road and into garage I had o get brutal with getting in gear and once in it was very stiff pulling it outa gear, when I forced it I could have sworn I heard something metal drop under the van.
Is it most likely the bush nder the gear stick or cou,d I have damaged the gearbox?
Look underneath. Check at gearbox end where shift rod engages with box. Ball joint could have popped out or even broken. I'm suggesting that rather than jumping to more serious conclusions.

Really? It is working now and drives fine except the slight crunch as I put into 3rd. What usually causes this given it never did it before? Could the bearing at the front under the gear stick have broke and isn't aligning the 4 gears selector correctly?
if you've checked out the linkage, esp the cup and ball to make sure the cup hasn't broken and the ball hasn't ridden up it's steel shank so metal is sticking out into cup then it's possibly a broken synchro or synchroring, if it's the synchrohub then it'll jam in gear if the rings broken it'll always crunch as the ring isn't slowing the gear down you can try double declutching into 3rd
Is that an expensive job to fix it is is the sync? One I could do myself if deepest the box?
I tried to take a few pics if anyone notices anything outa place? But I didn't have tools to hand so couldn't remove the metal box underneath to take clear pics (rammed camera in).
Also when in neutral my gear stick is all the way right, is this normal?:

on a 4 speed the natural detent position is third/fourth due to the spring in the gearbox acting on a metal cup in the end of the selector shaft inside the box
on a five speed the stick's natural position is 2nd /3rd position
There is a very recent article in the WIKI on the gear change mechanism. Its for a 5-speed but its similar for a 4-speed. Check that everything looks as it should as a starting point. It explains how it all works. If it checks out ok, you probably do have box probs and double declutching as Aidan suggested is something you'll need to get used to or source another gbox:
Sadly (as I found out) a broken sychro hub can leave no trace of metal on the gearbox drain magnet until it falls to pieces and leaves you stranded somewhere.

I guess a more to the point question is can you break the synchro on a specific gear (3rd in my case) from forcing the van into gear (mostly 1st) when the clutch is not fully depressed (as when my slave cylinder leaked and left me stranded at a dangerous junction).
When I got the van into my garage by putting it into first with engine off and starting it with enough welly to bounce it in I fond it very hard to pull it out of gear when engine off. This is when I had to pull hard and force it back out of gear, at which point I heard something metal fall and hit the floor. It sounded relatively light?? I am convinced this must be something to do with it as the gear stick feels slightly different now, like it's not slotting into the gears as nicely. Or could be placebo lol
Anyway I will look further into the gear linkage this weekend and will remove the metal box so I can get a better look.
