Air starvation in 2.0l Aircooled

Hi, My 2.0l Aircooled (two carbs) T25 is playing havoc.

The van started showing signs of what I think is air stravation somewhere by cutting out at junctions, Fuel economy dramatically reduced and power is dramatically down.

I have a a go at it this morning to see if I can locate the problem and have tried the following;

* Removed the airfilter to which seems relatively clean and ran the van but issues persisted
*Shortened a pipe from the inlet manifold on right hand side under the carb which was kinked and cracked that links to the left hand carb (any ideas to what this is for?). This tube was very long and reversed round on itself and looked like it had been added as a 'that will do' fix by a previous owner
*ran the van and WD40 sprayed all the tubing connections to see if there was any change in engine noise and there was none

Other thoughts is that some diaphargms may have gone in the carb causing the air starvation issues but that is just me speculating.

When I did remove the air filter one side was very clean (left carb side) and the right hand carb side was noticably more dirty as if it had been blowing out some dirty oily substance though not in over abundance.

At a bit of a loose end now as I am not sure what to try next other than get the carb refurb kit.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am not the most knowlegable of mechanics.

Does it have a choke set up on it at all and is it happening when it's warm or cold?

It has an auto-choke.

I had a problem where my carb was full of gunk so van kept cutting out, I had no inline fuel filter, carb got cleaned out by the RAC bloke who opened it up and blew everything out with an air line, it ran fine after that. Another possibility is fuel pump, see if it's delivering ok to the carbs, good strong flow. To get the performance back I could send you some of the ginger wine I've been brewing, tap it in like nitrous for that extra kick

are all the idle control valves working and not bunged up with muck , is there a electrical currant running to them if you look down the 2 carbs do the left and right carbs look down the same when the choke has gone of

Check the rubber elbow and tee at either end of the metal pipe that runs across the bulkhead. If either has popped off you'll stall at low revs.

These are not difficult engines to set up, but they do need 'tickling' from time to time to get the best out of the motor.

Static ignition, air leaks, timing and dwell angle, carbs cleaned and set up as per the factory settings, the linkages and the throttle cable greased,

Hi guys,

Thanks for the help. One of the tubes between the carbs had indeed come loose which I found yeaterday but almost immediately after the Idling enrichment unit burnt out.

Does anyone know where I can get one of these as I cant find one anywhere online.

just plug the two wires together from the idle stab unit, it wont affect anything on the van

Hello,

Carefully unscrew the idle enrichment box from the side of the LH carb, beware tiny screws!!

A dot of araldite on the vacuum sensor,

Leave it wired up.

Check the idle jet screws (brass tapered), there should be a little rubber seal, 'O' ring. If they are missing, I use valve oil seals, at a frightening 50 euro cents a piece.

Biggest problems on these are air leaks, perished hoses, and enthusiastically bodged settings.
