Stop and crunch in reverse

Post by thefatsurfer »

Imagine my surprise as it has been behaving itself recently. 16' Mtdi aaz syncro, 89 i think. Reversing slowly in a car park and it felt like i hit something solid, someone outside heard a "crunch". I get out, and nothing within 10 metres of me. Odd. Everything is ok for a day. Try reversing out of the drive and the dam thing is stuck in reverse, and it feels like i hit something too. You can reverse through the resistance but only did it once as it doesn't seem wise. Finally gets it out of reverse by pushing hard into "G". Diff noise from the back is slightly buzzier than normal. Any thoughts lads and lasses? getting peeved with it all.

Very much sounds like your pinion bearing is collapsing and your crown wheel and pinion is eating itself. Dont drive but sounds like terminal damage has already occurred.
And an AAZ is a TD not a TDI or mTDI.

aaaah 1Z! i remember now. My apologies to all . Thanks Russel, Alan and Aiden for the useful info. Take it that will be a new pinion bearing then. Fab. Anyone know how much are they (if you can still get hold of them)? (anyone want to buy a 16" 1z Mtdi camper? )

And likely a 'new' ring and pinion? Dunno bout manuals much, but if Aidan didn't mean the Diff sump, drop that too, and have a look at the final dive and see if its knackered. They should look smooth like this with no 'Mater' (Cars - Pixar) like knarley teeth:
