The LEZ. What exactly is it and does it affect me?

Post by hotpod »

I do know that the last few times i drove to london, near the end of the m4 there were signs about the Low emmissions zone. there were no instructions about what it meant, or if i had to do anything so i just carried on like everyone else.
That was at least 2 years ago now though.
so what is it exactly, and what does a t3 driver have to do if anything should he venture too far along the m4 again?

If you have a doka, single cab, or panel van and its a diesel you cant drive in the zone unless you want to pay the charge. The charge is about £200 I think but if you have a van that is registered as a camper on the log book you are OK but you have to tell the LEZ people and send a copy of your vin plate and log book. I think if you have a Velle you can get round it and Lloydy seems to know abit about that.

what if its a doka running on bio fuel?
would that be tricky to explain.
and does the £200 cover you for a year.
and does that mean if i want to drive to visit my mates in town, that i have to plan well in advance and get the camper ok'd well before i go?

A velle is classed as an MPV. So it's fine.

It goes of the engine type, our Diesel engines arn't a euro 4 engine so no to bio fuel. At the moment if you enter the zone and dont pay they send you a letter telling you you have been spotted and if you enter again you will be fined and you have a month to make any adjustments to make your vehicle compliant. After that month if you get caught again you have to pay

It only takes a couple of days to get it sorted, I did put a thread up on M/O forum on how not to do it (like the way I did as it took ages) but I had to remove it.

thanks.
so my petrol camper should be compliant. i registered it here as a grey high top camper as soon as i imported it. ( even though it was a shiny red panel van at the time)
i should just get the paperwork done just in case i cross the tamar again.
hardly likely but you never know.

It's £200 a day mate!

Petrol vans are fine, regardless of body type. The Low Emmision Zone only includes diesel vehicles registered before August 2001.

Alternative fuels count too so long as its certified and has been changed on your V5 by the twats in Swansea.

You mean on Irish plates? Don't know how connected your motoring authority is to the DVLA, but they may be able to catch up with you, like people get speeding tickets from central Europe.

The LEZ only applies to commercial diesel vehicles over 1250Kg gross weight registered before 2001 (ie allT25's) Petrol vehicles are unaffected. There is an exception for those registered as motor caravans weighing between 1250 and 2500Kg. Caravelles are also unaffected if they are registered as MPV's (ie not commercials). Most of the problems arise from the many T25's registered as Vans with windows, this is quite common with conversions and imports. I have just had to sort this out myself as my imported syncro multivan was registered as a van with windows. I have now reregistered it as a motor caravan, (surprisingly easy given the horror stories on most forums, i just downloaded the requirements from the DVLA website, Photo'ed all relevant bits and sent the lot back to the DVLA. New log book came back about a month later). It is I understand more difficult to reregister as a multivan. There are some T25's with a gross weight of more than 2500Kg. so they fail to meet the requirements.
Basicaly if you don't live within the zone then just don't bother to drive in with you're van!

The first I really knew about the LEZ was when I was buying my van last month. The guy was selling it as it was not LEZ compliant (and living in london, he needed it to be)

Thank you LEZ!
