INSULATION..

Post by Cainy »

Morning!

I've got a Hannover Edition Bluestar "Bluey" that is currently being resprayed and made good. There was a lot of welding needed as apparently it had started rotting from the inside out thanks to a perished seal, as well as the usual rot spots. Anyway once its done it should be solid for a good number of years and i'd like to keep it that way. I plan to empty out the interior and set about sound proofing and insulating it as i regularly sleep in it for work and its pretty bloody nippy lately.

I was thinking of taking the following actions and wanted to see what you lot think. Painting the inside of the panels with sound deadening paint (Any brand suggestions?), then stick on some foil lined bubble wrap stuff (seen it in wickes)
Then the tricky bit, I'm not sure what to use to fill up the rest of the space with. I've heard bag filled rock wool, some one told me sheeps wool is cheap and bloody warm however i dont want it to sweat in the bags, my favourite option at the moment is on ebay sold by megavanmats described as "dacron/polyester wadding".
Also, i'm presuming that in order to keep it toasty inside and quiet in the rain i'll need to tackle the roof lining, this looks scary, should i get it done professionally or is it do-able?

I'm sure one of you have done this yourself, i'd be grateful of any advice regarding insulation, or indeed any help on how to bombproof my massive investment in Bluey.

Cainy.

Have a search through the forum - the insulation thing has been done to death... much like the oil type and tyre pressure questions!

sorry if this might seem a little unhelpful, just as a said it's been done time and time and time again, everyone has their own answer/reason/justification for which insulation type to use, in no particular order the main thing used are:-

thermo-wrap (silver foiled bubble wrap type stuff)
rockwool
rockwool slabs
recycled bottles (like rock wool)

moisture is the biggest problem you'll come across so a vapour barrier and is rock wool etc is used then many recommend putting it into bags to stop it acting like a sponge

The roof is not as hard as you might think - just be careful to not tear the lining....
It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!

I have been told to use sheeps wool insolation as it is breathable so should not hold moisture. It is pretty expensive though about £70

If you still want to use sheepwool Ive been looking at a site called greenandeasy theyve got quite a few different sizes of sheep wool available and the prices appear quite good.
