I apologise 1stly for my lack of knowledge. My 1989 2.1Caravelle has been off the road for too long now and my mechanic has been through it and is at a loss.
(I'm told) injectors are firing correctly but too much fuel is getting through and blowing out quite a bit of smoke. My mechanic has checked everything. And from local VW advice we've been told it could be The Brain or this 'Hall' control unit ( this has 2 x 3 pin ports, labelled -TSZ +TSZ and +HALL -HALL.) Is There a Guardian Angel of the Vdub world that could help ??
Kind Regards Neil. neilcat1@hotmail.com
Always looking for hints and tips for improving the Caravelle. Inside and out. Used for camping and gigging.
The Hall effect sender is ignition and it doesn't sount like that.....ECU (brain....well I guess it's a possibility that this is Vanagon Syndrome) but if this has a CAT fitted then I would almost certainly say you you are more likely to have a faulty Lambda probe (fitted in the Cat) exhaust.
You can follow the wiring back from the probe and unplug the connector in the engine bay, this puts the engine into limp mode and stops the over fueling...at least this will prove if this diagnosis is correct.
Providing I'm not barking up the wrong tree....So is your engine a 2.1 MV? with Cat?

The engine won't run at all if the hall effect switch was faulty. It is more likely that the ECU is receiving a signal from a defective sensor than it being faulty, it is very robust. Most likely cause for a very rich mixture is when Temp II sensor is open circuit or high resistance. Next I would look at fuel pressure. Hope this helps.
Hi Neil.
Have you taken it to Dave O'shea? Down the side of Merchant Taylors Girls School.
He owned a gold Caravelle, was the service manager of Tom England.
