diesel waterpump suspect?

Post by kingdalg »

hello to all who read this, i run a 82' 1.6 diesel devon. over the last couple of weeks ive notice my heaters are getting crapper by each day. so yesterday i flushed the matrix, renued my antifreeze and changed expansion tank and dalek. the heaters are a lot better but the rad isnt getting very hot all the way across it also the temp gauge is sitting at 3/4 instead of usual 1/2. i know its not the head gasket as did it 2 months ago with skim pressure test, plus the coolant system isnt pressurising. the coolant system is bleed well also. im thinking waterpump issue, do these suffer with impellor faults like the golfs? are they plastic? any advice would be appreciated! cheers :ok

Impeller is a metal one.
What do you mean about the radiator not getting hot 'all the way across'?

the rad is only hottish at bleed end and cold at the other, i think its flow related? rad blocked, stat stuck or pump impellor, do these suffer with water pumps? cheers

Water pumps from GSF (with 80 90 discount) are cheap enough and the dearer ones are original VW with the logo ground off, worth replacing anyway I would have thought?

I still say I would want to make 100%sure Ive bled it correctly and part of this proccess will show the coolant circulating.

ok, so the plot thickens, this morning i flushed the rad - good flow. checked the stat in mug of boiling hot water - part opened. bleed the coolant each time after several road tests - did it untill no air came out of rad. after 10 mile journey from work checked rad and pipe from stat - slightly warmish? im thinking stats on the way out or pump? any good ideas? cheers
