I cant undo my oil filter!

Post by chuggers72 »

OK - servicing my van I bought last month - replaced all the usual bits (filters, diz cap, rotor arm etc) - drained the oil but cannot get the oil filter off! Ive used a chain wrench but this is now distorting the oil filter and I cannot get a good grip on it - any other ways of getting the b*****d off ! All help appreciated - Ive not got much skin left on my knuckles!! Just realised that the old one is smaller than the replacement meaning there is less to get hold of.

Could hammer a big screwdriver through it, then use the screwdriver as a handle to undo it?

That's ok so long as the new filter definately fits ?? I have the same as Rob BUT the filter should only be nipped up by hand with the seal wiped with clean oil.

beat me to it , big yorkshire screwie, also as said folk in the past have tennded to overtighten them, and as you found the metal of the canister is real thin, next time you get a tight one try using the chain or other lowerdowwn the filter where the base is attatched as its a lot stronger here.
