Hi All,
My van failed its MOT test this morning on 'nearside rear wheel bearing has excessive play'. I have just been out to the garage to have a feel to see how bad it is (it is **Dangerous** on the MOT printout). Now, with it jacked up, I held the tyre at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and 'wiggled' it - no movement at all. Tried the same again at 3 and 9 o'clock - nothing.
Am I doing this wrong?!
Thanks,
Stu

Re: Checking for play in wheel bearings
They may be saying there is 'lateral play' i.e. in and out ... pull the wheel towards you and push it back and you'll feel it.

Thanks Ian.
Gave it another go. With one foot on the bottom and two hands at the top I could just about make out some play - and a little creaking. Will try the lateral movement too.
I had imagined from his description that it would be like Jed's one here, but it really was only a small movement. My first thought was that he'd tried to move it holding the beauty rings!
