As I spend a fair bit of time in my local VOSA office it thought I would try and put this one to bed.
“I asked are there currently any plans to make LHD lights a fail in the mot in the future”
After ringing two other offices (including 3 members of the steering group who deicide such matters) the definitive answer (in my mind at least) is NOPE they are not planning any revisions for a couple of years and they cannot foresee any circumstances in which LHD lamps would be made a fail.
LHDs with a mask should always be an advisory but never a fail.

Hope it helps

I have it on good authority that Hella are not going to re-tool the RHD square lamps, full stop. But "may" consider the LHD ones if they deem the market to be sufficient to justify the exercise.

Forget export from SA as parts supply there is drying up too :( so unless there is a heap of stock out in Japan, look after 'em if you've got 'em. I have just had to buy a full set because one of the outers was a LHD and I couldn't find an orphan one anywhere. £££

Etch your partial VIN number on lens, protective film, headlamp guards, the works.

I had even considered modding the front panel to fit 'rocco or Jetta-style lamps, with the side of the lens exposed. It's an option if body and paintwork is on the cards, but not a cheap one.

My left hand drive lights have passed every year with no deflectors at a different garage each time. Each time, I give the tester the deflectors, and each time he has given them back at the end saying the light pattern is fine??? :?
