Gearbox to CV joint mounting little rubber/metal seal
I noticed that what looks like a small metal backed rubber seal (blue rubber) has fallen out of the mounting where the CV joint bolts onto. It looks a little like the top of a tin can, with a rim and a small hole in the middle. It seems to push fit back into the centre of the output shaft/flange on the gearbox. Does anyone know what it is? Should it be there or can I leave it off?
The gearbox is a Syncro 5 sp originally mated to a JX TD.

shouldn't have a hole in it it is a seal and stops gear oil leaking out of the gearbox and into the cv

You can't even get driveshaft nuts for T3s here in Norway. I had to order the CV joint plates and lock washers from JK in the UK. Is there no way to safely reuse it? Put it in place and give the middle a tap to flatten the metal?
E D I T: need the van on the road for next week so I'll have to reuse it. I can order one and fit it at a later date, maybe when it is warm outside

sure if you can get it flat reuse it, rubber faces the cv,use a pin down the edge as you press it in to let the air out so it slides in nice
if you need anything for gearbox etc.. you can always contact me I have most stuff in stock used and new
still available new from VW

Thanks for the tips, I'll bang the seal flat and get back under the van now.Aidan wrote:sure if you can get it flat reuse it, rubber faces the cv,use a pin down the edge as you press it in to let the air out so it slides in nice
