I tend to gravity bleed mostly, very rare we have to resort to pressing the pedal, usually when we do it's down to aforementioned sludge, a press or 2 then the pedal suddenly sinks and they hey presto you have a bit lump if $h!te floating around in your special coke bottle.

Tip to stop open pipes pouring fluid out is to put cling film on top of master cylinder and refit cap, no air in means no fluid out.. Works best if you can find a flat cap but will do with the float type as well.
