Possible Clutch Failure?

Post by boscofinnigan »

Hello T25'ers,

I have had a good look through this and a number of other on-line forums hoping to find answers but to be honest I'm as confused as when I started.

The symptoms:

Small amount of grinding, usually only second gear.
Juddering on moving off, especially uphill.
Revs without acceleration when flooring the accelerator pedal.
A friend also says it has a very long clutch (looks the same length as every other T25 to me :wink: )

I have changed the fuel filter which did have a fair amount of rust in it. The lines have not been checked tho.

Also needs a good look over by someone who knows what they are doing mechanically, so if anyone knows any good mechanics in norn iron let me know. I was recommended Dave Caddy but he is only working at T2 engine rebuilds at the moment.

Cheers.

Sounds like a slipping clutch ... unless you have a cable clutch (early aircold) then there's no such thing as a 'long clutch' because the hydraulics takes up the slack. Put the handbrake on, start engine, engage 2nd and lift foot up on the clutch ... if it's slipping the engine will carry on revving without stalling.

Welcome to the forum :ok

Cheers for the welcome and quick reply Ian.

Just tried that there now. It did exactly what you said it would, revving continued and didn't stall. I presume it is a hydraulic clutch;

Off to find out how to fix it now.

Cheers, Barry.

sounds like a knackered clutch.
However it also reminded me of an episode where suddenly had odd noises from the clutch whilst pulling away up hill and felt like a "long clutch" this was after a very long trip. I knew the clutch was good so decided to bleed the slave cylinder. The muck that came out of it was amazin. So why try flushing the clutch circuit though first. It probably needs doing anyway. It sounds more likely that its the clutch itself but it's an easy job to do and something that can easily be ruled out. Cheers Rich
