Reversing Light Switch From VW

Post by CovKid »

Mostly mechanical in operation but does anyone know what VW commercial charge for a reversing light switch? The one I got from GSF fell to bits after two weeks and I have no confidence a replacement will be any better.

1.9dg - 85 - 5 speed (think switch is common to all though) spade type, not moulded plug as listed by Brickwerks.

Just want it solved :D

Going on usual VW prices, it would probably be cheaper to employ a human being to shine a torch out of the back window every time you put it in reverse.

I'm sure it's obsolete. I think the number is 020941521A if you want to check

Brickwerks sell them http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=120" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

had a GSF one on for a while with no problems. you probably just got a bad one

Sadly it looks as though the Brickwerks one is identical. I'll change to the other connector type and change the spades for smaller ones or something. Really had enough with this switch fiasco. One week no reversing light, the next permanently on! Can't be doing with that. Thanks guys.

Have to say though, some VW parts are often cheaper than all the so called discount VW outlets or only marginally more and much better quality. Depends what you buy but theres just too much around that is made in the far east and no way up to standard. On this one, one spade worked loose.

the early spade connection type reverse switch is pretty poor, last year I went through the box of old ones and only 1 out of 9 worked, the later ones with the moulded plug socket had a fail rate of only 2 out of 16, the washer is essential part of the height adjustment for correct operation and a broken bearing cup on the selector shaft can give intermittent operation of reverse switch
there's a fair few preloved genuine ones here
the working early one went to a customer
020 945 415 A from VW over a tenner still listed maybe obsolete only way to find out is to order it
early one is 251 941 521 obsolete

Mmmmmmm, when I fitted a new switch it wouldn't work with the washer in place. Took the washer out and it worked. Does that suggest something very poorly inside the box?

In hindsight, I'm not sure if I want to know the answer to that!!!!!

No, chances are its the same brand. The contacts are NOT good on these with the result that the switch can have further to travel. I certainly would NOT recommend these switches to anyone else. If you'd seen how these are assembled, you wouldn't buy them. Very poor quality indeed. Can see why the failure rate is so high.

If anyone else is faced with a broken switch, fit the later type and source the plug or come up with something that would do for plug. Looks to me like small spades will fit those.

My switch (which was the older style two 6.3mm lucar connector type but not the very early switch which is a bigger thread) failed. It would not light up the lights when fitted to the gearbox or when I pushed it down manually. Shorting the two wires made the lights come on....switch failure

So I removed it and replaced it with the Vemo one from GSF with the washer and it would not work when I engaged reverse. However pressing it manually made the light come on. So I re-fitted it without the washer (which isn't listed on etos) and it worked, and has done for about 3 months.

No idea what I did with the washer :?
