doka wheel carrier part 1

Post by axeman »

as with most of us, i an running a set of 15inch and 16inch wheels, and i have rock and roll bed in the back of the doka so access to the original location for the spare (under the rar seat) is not useable or practical. originally i welded a mount on to the canopy roll cage, this worked well when the vindic was on but did not work when i took off the canopy and have the load bed cover on. i have been lugging it around in the load bead but this is not really ideal,
sooooooooooooo some 60X60x10 angle iron and various other 10mm thick plate and i have come up with this,

right went and picked up a few more bits to get this moving along, i gave the ian the bar and tube for the carrier and he machined the 2inch bar to accept the 43mm tube he also installed a jaguar valve guide in to the middle along with a counter sunk grease nipple. there is also a nylon bush on the top and the bottom of it to help with a smooth action when opening and closing.

the arm and the disk from the back

first fix on to the mounting plate. the lower (horizontal) needs to be lengthened slightly to enable the the carrier to be opened enough for the rear drop side to be opened fully.

Looking good Neil - cant remenber if it was this you might want dropping off to Medway Galv , if so - no probs. might be worth bearing in mind that when dipped any 'peceived' ( its their call) air traps will need to be drilled. (by them, and not with the same care and attention you have already brought to the project) Even on hollow tube with other holes already in. Might be worth thinking about at this prototype stage.

Nice work. Does it locate on the rear tailgate at all, or is it just on the swivel at the bottom? How does it lock in position? Looks good :ok

there is only the one hinge point at the bottom, it will be locked in via 2 clips/clasps.

this one which i andy has passed on to me (thanks andy) dont know what it was originally used for but it is defiantly military spec, built/made to a specification not too a price. nice bit of kit.

Image

gonna mount it in this sort of location

Image

there will be a second clip/clasp (ortec) mounted just under the drop side. which should keep every thing nice a tight.

this is the hinge with a nylon bush at the top and bottom, it is a nice tight interference fit so has a nice smooth action.

Good work Neil.
Hope you don't mind, but are you only fitting catch down on bumper? No way of fitting it nearer wheel? I feel there may be alittle too much flex in arm, especially off-road/speed bumps. No way of maybe extending a bracket up near wheel & fitting catch to drop-gate? Just a thought. :ok
