Are we correct in thinking that all rear shafts are the same?

I seem to remember that the 16" rear shaft is about 5 mm shorter than the 14" one

This is not good .... !!

The silver one is the 14" driveshaft the black is 16 both outer cv's are 14 locking but inner cv on the 16 seems to have more articulation than the standard 14 even tho it has the same bolt holes as a 14 flange

From memory the 14 one was 28mm but not sure the other being 32mm as in photo Am just on my way home today so will verify that with a micrometer, length wise I think they are the same.

The plot thickens. I would really like to tie this down (in my own head) - I have been working with a view that as I did not have 16 Locking shafts then I could replace the worst one (^^) with a 14/16 non locking shaft. Neil sorted me out with one of his spares ( :ok ) he has a 14 van as you know. I assumed it would fit .

First off the splined outer end is way too small for any of my outer CV joints (I have 4 to choose from) I know that sounds obvious but as I said I was working on the assumption that as my shafts are not 16 lockers then they would fit on a 14 or 16 NL van - they will but only with the correct outer CV

Second - my shaft (on Right ) is longer than Neils ( on left ) by 5mm.

Third - Bentley has a diagram of shaft (I assume its a 14" as iirc bentley does not deal with 16") and states the length to be 570 (again - iirc)- Neils shaft is definately longer than that?

So ( cant find any part numbers on shafts ) using the part info posted by Lloyd above, there are three shafts available for front syncro. I think I must have 16 non locking shafts, which need setting up with 16" outer CV's.

Paul is going to post some more measurements of the two shafts he has pictured - Paul - you said both outer CV's are 14" locking - this is also confusing me - as there is noway that neils 14 shaft would work with my outer CV's and likewise I cannot see how your 32mm shaft would work with a 14 outer CV ?? :?: :?: Anyway I still need a shaft to match mine, hopefully Miiko can get one to me, but in the meantime any ideas gratefully received. :D :D Also If we can get to the bottom of how and if shafts are interchangeable that would really help me get this issue squared away. Having trouble moving on from it :rofl :rofl

Here Jes, ive been doing some checking,

this is info i have found on the samba

the stock Syncro 16 rear driveshaft length end to end is 525mm. I took the time to measure the stock
ones on my 16 when I replaced the rear CV joints last time.
I also have a GKN catalogue with the same measurements in (well 524mm.. close enough :) ).
It also lists the Syncro 14/2WD driveshaft as being longer at 536.5mm and the Auto driveshafts as
being 565.5mm and 517.5mm.

and also this

These lengths were posted on the 16" Syncro Yahoo group a while back.

For the archives:

Rear:

14" axle length - 542mm
axle diameter - 27mm

both ends
spline diameter - 26,5mm
spline count - 33

16" axle length - 528mm
axle diameter - 28mm

both ends
spline diameter - 30mm
spline count - 28

Front:

14" axle length - 577mm
axle diameter - 26mm

at front diff.
spline diameter - 26,5mm
spline count - 33

at wheel
spline diameter - 27mm
spline count - 25

16" axle length - 585mm
axle diameter - 28mm

at front diff.
spline diameter - 26,5mm
spline count - 33

at wheel
spline diameter - 30mm
spline count - 28

Hope this is helpful.

interesting to read 16" rears are shorter that 14" equivalent. would have expected the other way round 16" having longer arms.

Measured them yesterday 14 locking shaft 26mm diameter the other 31mm also got a text from mike ghia this morning
Paul, have just been reading up on your odd Syncro 16 front shaft. It's not an original Syncro 16 shaft. The extra rings around it suggest that it's from an Audi. The difference between Syncro 14 (exactly the same part as Syncro 16 without front difflock) and Syncro 16 (with difflock) is the shaft and the outer cv joint. The inner cv joint is the same part on all. You can't fit the bigger outer cv joints to a 14 shaft and the same goes with the smaller outer cv joint and larger shaft. Mike
