Will a VW passat engine fit into my t3?
Hi all,
I am currently researching what engine will fit straight into my van and thinking of something like an audi or a vw passat, which one out of the two will fit in with the least amount of modification? would really appreciate if you could all share your knowledge with me as i am looking to be at at least one vw event this year!! HELP lol
cheers

If you are currently diesel there are a few that will fit. Most popular seems to be Agg or 2E from mid 90's golf etc, 1y, 1z.

it has no engine at the moment due to the guy who i bought it off was putting a 2.6 cosworth engine in, so its pretty much open for anything. i am looking for a diesel with abit of umph! and also good MPG. any ideas mate?

Do you have engine bars, mounts, bell housing etc?
I'm currently having 110bhp AFN TDi fitted but should be running around 140bhp. Lots of power and economical but a lot of money to have done. 1z 90bhp is more common and cheaper to do. But you will require longer gears fitting to your gearbox.
Search on Brickyard for 2e conversion. Cheap, economical and drivable.

Same here mate, except I have a gear box, bell housing and some other bits and bobs.
Looks like I am going down the 1Y conversion route! Well, hoping to anyway.
Jon.

How are you finding this?
After taking my van off the road to sort out the sills which the last owen repaired and didn't seal

I'm now toying with the same route, thinking about taking a donor passat/mk3 golf getting it fully overhauled putting it in
At the mo I've got a CS 1600 diesel which was running ok when I took it off the road
I've had a fairly good read around but just thought I'd ask If you'd come across anything particularly horrific?

@ OP,
The van must have a bellhousing on the gearbox surely? If it's circular with 4 bolt holes and the starter bulge on the right hand side as you look in from the back, it's a petrol one so had a flat 4 originally. Diesels have a lot more bolts and the starter is mounted roughly on top.
To mount up an inline petrol engine from a Golf in a VW-Lego stylee, for example, you'll need a load of diesel engine and mounting parts as they have common "architecture" but most of it's getting pretty scarce/expensive.
If your van was originally an Aircooled petrol (no lower grill up front) then you're pretty well stuck with finding another one as all the mods to update it to watercooled will probably not be worth all the effort.

Thanks for the heads up silverbullet. I will stick with her being Aircooled for the time being. But one day will make the conversion to the desired engine. but time being shes having a petrol just want to get out in her!
