Well my immolisor decided to play up over Christmas and with lack of time, it didn't get the attention it deserved.
I asked for Tools from Santa, so now I have a nice shiny halfords professional 150pc set with ratchet spanners etc.
So I rolled up my sleeves and tried my best to look like a mechanic, I was hopeless.
So my time served Dad nips around and fixes the problem in 30 minutes, with my help of course. He always leaves it some time to come round to help because he loves to winge about the cost of the van.
I then used his time to learn some more about the van, he showed me how to set the timing, he reckons it's miles out.
I need to buy a strobe to set it properly, can anyone recommend one?
Anyway, my van is now driving again and I really have missed it.
Just want it to snow so I can ask my dad is his 6 berth motor home to come along camping and see how he gets on!
Dads don’t always know best hahaha
Syncro fever has definitely caught me again
Some newbie syncro advice

Hi Mike, I use a Sealey model no. TL93. I've had it for several years and it seems reliable. It does advance, RPM, dwell (although you've not got points) and 0 - 16 volts. Its not a full on pro model but from time to time I check it against a mate's Snap On £220+ job and its always been accurate.

Well I bought a Sealey £60 in the end, but it does advance etc.
The timing was so easy to do, I've marked up 5btdc and 10btdc so if I can find 98octain I can adjust with ease
I've just moved into my old apartment (tenants have left), it only has 1 space and I have 3 vehicles
Guess what's staying......
The syncro of course!!!!
So I'm selling the 2wd and the Saab, keeping the motorbike for the city run around.
Next action on my list is temp gauge, it only moves a fraction and maintains the red light. T stat has been changed and checked, to no avail.
t-stat is in a 2wd housing, will that make any difference?! When the vw mechanic changed the engine, he said he tried all the basic trouble shoots. So if there anything syncro specific about temp gauges?
Also, should I be looking at fitting oil gauges, I've only done some reading on this and it sounds complicated. Could a novice tackle this job?! Are there any other gauges a new syncro owner should consider?!
Loving the syncro, moving house was a doddle and I even used it as an office when I locked myself out
I've wasted so much money on all sorts of nice cars, none of them have even come close to the excitement I get from my trusty orange panel van!

2wd temp sensor uses a 2 pin plug, earth and signal, our wiring loom only has signal wire as sensor is earthed through the tstat housing

Thanks Aidan, makes me wonder why a 2wd housing would be fitted. I will have a good look and see if I can figure out how it has been fitted. If not, i might put it back to syncro spec, but looks it will cost at least £110

Maybe an aftermarket solution might be cheaper, until one comes up for sale.
Unless anyone has a syncro style t-stat housing they want to sell?!

Re: Some newbie syncro advice
it's probably a preloved 2wd engine
I've got a spare syncro tstat housing here just removed last week from Neil's old engine

That would be great Aiden, thanks.
Send me over your PayPal details, are you ok to post?!
Well the 2wd housing lasted longer than the preloved engine, I've since swapped it for a very low mileage one, hence the need for some working gauges!
